About Joseph Haws, Expert Piano Technician
Joseph Haws is a highly skilled piano technician with over 23 years of experience in tuning, rebuilding, and repairing pianos. His passion for pianos began at the age of 5, sparking a lifelong dedication to the instrument. This passion led him to Brigham Young University (BYU) in 2001, where he pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance, graduating in 2005. During his time at BYU, Joseph honed his technical skills as a student technician from 2002 to 2004 under the mentorship of Jim Busby and Keith Kopp, two esteemed professionals in the field. Through their guidance, he acquired the expertise necessary to become a Registered Piano Technician (RPT), a certification he earned with the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) in 2005.
After graduating, Joseph spent four years working as a piano rebuilder at a high-end piano shop in Salt Lake City, where he specialized in restoring pianos to their optimal condition. During this time, he developed a deep proficiency in rebuilding piano actions, restringing, and repairing every component of a piano, ensuring each instrument performed at its best. In 2007, Joseph returned to his hometown in the Tri-Cities and established his own practice, serving Southeast and Central Washington as well as Northeast Oregon. Since 2008, he has also maintained a full piano studio, teaching students of all ages and levels, with several advancing to perform advanced classical repertoire. Additionally, Joseph serves as the director of Tri-City Choral Fusion, a group of choirs for youth ages 8–18, fostering musical growth in the community. Joseph has built a reputation for excellence across the region, working with clients throughout the Greater Tri-Cities Area, Walla Walla, Ellensburg, and beyond.
Based in Richland, WA, Joseph currently maintains over 70 pianos at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, ensuring they meet the high standards required for academic and performance settings. He was recently elected Vice President of the Central Washington Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), reflecting his leadership and commitment to the professional community. Joseph remains dedicated to providing exceptional service, whether it’s a routine tuning, a complex rebuilding project, or a detailed repair. His extensive experience and commitment to quality ensure that every piano he works on delivers its finest sound and performance.
